Greek Mythology Gods, Goddesses | Poseidon God of the Sea, Destroyed Atlantis, the Lost City

Poseidon is famous as the god of sea who controls the seas. He was a very moody god. He does actions based on how he feels like at any time.

Greek sailors prayed to this god for a safe voyage as he can create storms and tides to disturb their journey over the sea. When he feels good he keeps the seas calm and even creates new islands. When he feels bad he strikes the ground with his trident and causes ship wrecks, springs, earthquakes and drowning of ships and sailors.

You must have heard about the city of Atlantis. There are some theories about it existence being true or not. But it was mentioned in the Greek Mythology as an interesting story.

Poseidon, the god of the seas, created a series of islands for his bride Cleito. This is what is named as the kingdom of Atlantis. It was basked in sunshine, rich in minerals, fruits, wheat and vegetables. There were also herds of animals on the lands.

The islands were ruled by wise kings who were happy to have these islands. They maintained peace and prosperity. With time, men became lazy and greedy. They started fighting among themselves.

This disgusted Poseidon who went very angry. He used his power to send huge tidal waves to drown the city of Atlantis forever.

Atlantis is a city that is a mystery in modern geography. Platos first mentioned in his dialogues. It continues to inspire modern literature, science fiction, movies and books. The word Atlantis is a common word referred to the lost civilizations that were advanced.

Poseidon is a god of many names in Greek Mythology. He is the god of the sea, famous for his actions based on his mood at any time. He creates and destroys, keeps quiet and disturbs oceans as he is mainly the god of seas. Read the full post:

Poseidon is most famous as the god of the seas. He is a very moody god. If he is in a good mood he keeps the seas calm and even creates new islands in the sea.

When he is in a bad mood, he gets angry and strikes the ground with his trident to create disturbance in the seas, drown ships and sailors, cause earth quakes etc.

This is the reason why the Greek sailors pray to the god Poseidon for a safe voyage on sea.

There is an example of his actions based on good and bad moods in the story of Atlantis. Atlantis is a city that Poseidon created when he was feeling good for his bride Cleito.

Atlantis is a series of beautiful islands Poseidon had created. This city was full of riches, sunshine, minerals, fruits and vegetables. There was no problem for people living in this city.

Men lived there happily. The islands of Atlantis were ruled by wise kings who maintained peace and prosperity.

With time people in Atlantis grew lazy and greedy. They fought among each other for more richness and possession of power. This made the god Poseidon very angry.

He quickly sent huge tidal waves of water on these islands as punishment to their people. The water waves drowned these islands completely into the ocean from where they were actually created.

This is how the god of the seas, Poseidon, works based on his mood. He helps sailors for a safe journey across the seas when he feels good. He sends tidal waves and causes earth quakes with his trident’s power when he feels bad. He really was the god of mood!

She was strong, fair and merciful, and also goddess of wisdom. Her birth has a legend which was unusual. It is an amazing story.

Zeus’s first wife Metis was pregnant. After knowing this Zeus, the king of the gods, swallowed her wife. This is because he heard from someone whose prophecy told that her child would be greater than her father.

It seems Zeus swallowed more than he can. Very soon he developed a terrible headache. Later his head split open and his child appeared in a fully grown form as goddess Athena.

There is another myth about the goddess Athena and the name of city of Athens in Greek Mythology. One time goddess Athena and god of the sea, Poseidon, have fought. They quarreled over who should be the patron of the city of Athens.

It was decided that the name will be given after whoever gives the best gift to the city.

Poseidon gave a gift of salt water spring near the city. Athena gave the gift of olive tree. The people of Athens were clever.

They decided that Athena’s gift was the better of the two gifts. The olive tree’s oil can be used for lighting, cooking and trading. They appreciated her gift of olive tree by naming the city of Athens of her, Athena.
